The Mental Benefits of Martial Arts

howtopickamartialartsschoolIt is no secret that athletics helps us build not only the body but also the mind.

And even though mental health very often is not the goal of practicing martial arts, sports psychology has established a positive link between physical and mental well-being, or mental toughness, if you will.

But how exactly would martial arts make you mentally tough?

Martial arts build confidence

The first benefit of martial arts for your mental toughness is that they help with building confidence. Martial arts can provide you with a massive mental boost thanks to the skills acquired and the ability to defend yourself and those close to you in extreme situations.

And confidence does play a huge role in our lives. If you ooze confidence, you will be more likely to be hired for your dream job or have a successful public speech.

But beware, getting over-confident is no better than being unconfident. Restraining yourself – namely, your confidence – is the next important mental skill that can be acquired from martial arts.

Martial arts improve self-restraint

Emotions are part of our life, but in certain situations, they are a tremendous weakness. And in martial arts, if you allow an emotional breach to occur and take control over you, you are going to be punished for it.

There are various emotions that you will need to learn to restrain in martial arts.

Overconfident in yourself, you may severely underestimate your opponent and then encounter staggering resistance. If your martial arts training is too tough for you, you may allow negative emotions to take over and significantly hamper your progress.

Or a missed hit may make you frustrated. And if give way to your frustration, you might make a rushed decision that would cost you a victory.

Self-restraint is exceptionally important in martial arts. If you achieve mental toughness, you will disallow your emotions and temptations to control yourself. Your every movement needs to be reasonable rather than rushed and emotional.

Needless to say, this mental toughness is going to be transferred to your everyday life as well. And under the stress of your study or career, that added mental control is going to be very helpful to you.

Martial arts make you more determined

Martial arts can be extremely challenging. You may be required to overcome yourself every single day and push out another rep, or fight your laziness and go to the gym, no matter how tired your body and mind are and no matter how sick you are from the routine. It may even get so tough that you just develop a desire to quit martial arts altogether.

A saying goes that a black belt is a white belt that hasn’t quit. And given the challenges awaiting you on the way to the top, this saying is very appropriate.

Discipline requires you to continue pushing no matter how hard it is. And if you do not quit, your success won’t be limited to just martial arts. Acquiring that mental toughness and the right mindset will transition to your everyday life, just like it was with self-restraint. And you may discover that the newly-acquired discipline tremendously helps you with achieving success in life.

  1. That’s good to know that martial arts would help to boost your confidence. I would think that if you know that you could defend yourself that you could not worry about getting hurt. I would think that it would help you to learn to handle the pain as well, so I’ll have to consider letting my kids learn martial arts.

  2. A very true article about the advantages of martial arts. It does create a lot of confidence and self discipline in the kids. Please keep posting such inspiring articles for everyone.
